The Holidays Are a Peak Season for Home Damage

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, fire departments and restoration companies see a significant spike in calls. Holiday decorations, cooking, space heaters, and vacant homes all create risks most people don’t think about until something goes wrong.

Fire Prevention Tips

  • Water your live Christmas tree daily — a dry tree can ignite in seconds
  • Keep trees at least 3 feet from fireplaces, heaters, and candles
  • Turn off tree lights when you leave or go to bed
  • Never leave candles unattended
  • Keep space heaters 3 feet clear of anything flammable — never run while sleeping
  • Plug space heaters directly into wall outlets, never extension cords

Frozen Pipe Prevention

  • Keep thermostat at least 55°F if traveling
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls during cold snaps
  • Know where your main water shutoff is before you need it
  • Let faucets drip slowly during extreme cold
